Patricia D. Shearer, MD, MS, FAAP founder of Patti's Place: Vital Pediatrics for Complex Kids

Dr. Patricia ("Dr. Patti") Shearer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Association of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She holds board certification in General Pediatrics, Hematology Oncology, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She graduated from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She completed internship and residency in Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Her first fellowship, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, was at Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where she received the American Cancer Society Training Grant. Her second fellowship, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, was at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. There she became motivated to relieve the challenges posed by chronic illness in children on siblings and other family members.

Dr. Patti has held academic appointments at the University of Maryland (Professor and Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology); University of Tennessee; University of Florida; Tulane University; and the Alix School of Medicine at Mayo Clinic. She earned several awards for excellence in teaching as part of her career, largely as a result of her clinical contributions to the care of children.

Dr. Patti has had a heart for children with complex conditions around the world. While at St. Jude, she held leadership roles in the International Outreach Program. At the University of Florida, she founded the Cancer Survivor Program for childhood cancer survivors affected by the late effects of treatment. She has presented her work on childhood tumors, cancer survivorship, quality of life, and sibling grief on every continent except Antarctica.

Through Pattis Place she will offer individualized care to relieve symptoms and suffering, coordinate care with other providers, and offer advanced care planning. She is careful to integrate best medical practices with the aspects of life that are most important to the child and those who care for him. As symbolized by the logo of a child nurturing a growing tree, she is committed to the enhancing the lives of her patients and their families.
